Antique Bakery Synopsis

Based on award-winning Japanese manga and by the director of 'MEMENTO MORI'. To a family fortune, Jin-hyuk (Ju Ji-hun) has money, the looks, the charm, everything except finding the love of his life.

So he sets up a fancy cake shop where women are sure to come. He hires Sun-woo (Kim Jae-wook), a talented and sought-after young pâtissier who had a crush on Jin-hyuk back in high school. Along with an ex-boxing champion Gi-beom and a clueless bodyguard Su-young, the four unique and handsome young men stir up the quiet neighbourhood at their cake shop, Antique.

Although seemingly careless and happy, each of the four men have unforgettable pasts that they are afraid to face. But their secrets slowly begin to unravel.

Big love for Min Kyu-dong who is one of those rare directors who mixes it up. I was kind of reminded of Ben Wheatley, the UK director who takes two genres and blends them together, and also the film 'The Guest', however neither that director nor that film took three disparate genres such as thriller, comedy and LGBT and whisked them together much like the ingredients of the countless cakes shown and scoffed in 'Antique Bakery'. Not his best, but he earns my respect for trying something different.

‘Antique Bakery’ isn't really sure what it is. I had fun watching it, but it's not a true gay comedy or an edgy thriller. Instead it is kind of stuck between the two, not sure which path to take. Kudos to Min Kyu-dong for trying something different by blending two very different genres, and kudos too to the game cast/eye-candy, but the director's own ‘Memento Mori’ brought both style and substance to a bland horror franchise, this doesn't quite achieve such heady heights.

Those with a soft spot for pastries and cakes look away now! Hats off to the set designers, 'food wranglers' and art directors, because the pastel colours, glazed treats ogled a la food porn and the overall feel of the film is very much that of being inside a French patisserie. Then again, the frothy fun is underscored by a deep, dark sub-plot which I won't give away. It's not entirely convincing because of this darker edge, but it was an entertaining ride with likeable characters nonetheless.

This is a really lovely tale about four young guys whose lives collide when they end up working together at the same bakery. Musical, romantic comedy and horror genres are all chucked in the blender to create a tasty result (the actors are rather handsome!) - a joy for the eyes and ears and really just a lot of fun. It's quite the classic in Korea I gather.

  • Watch it for the cute cast and the gay plot, wasn't too keen on the darker backstory, but you certainly can't say there's another film quite like this.

  • Films about food should have their own genre. This one's a bit like a Korean 'Amelie'.

  • Loved this, a gay comedy that wasn't marketed as such, but which was a real heart-warmer. Not many of those about!
