Try and imagine how 'The Relic' would have turned out had it been set in Seoul, directed by the editorial team at 'The Socialist Worker' and scripted by a Greenpeace activist with a soft spot for Kafka. Can't picture it? Of course not, and therein lies the beauty of 'The Host', Bong Joon Ho's quirky ode to Korea's tainted past, confusing present and daunting future - with a big monster in it. The eventual showdown between a distraught family brought together by tragedy and a big slithering motherfu*ker on the grounds of a protest rally bring things to an unexpected conclusion. Everything about 'The Host' is gorgeous and unique.
