Commonly referred to as the first feature film by a black lesbian, The Watermelon Woman is also both funny and thought provoking. It's strength lies in more than being the first of its kind, it also acts as a showcase for the immense talents of writer/director/editor and protagonist Cheryl Dunye. It's funny, smart, sexy and it makes fascinating statements about the power of film and the ownership of a film history previously overlooked. Recommended.
