Being a fan of Mongolian culture I have decided to check out Mongolian section. I wanted to watch some romantic film and looking at selection this one seemed it could be the the right movie for my mood after reading description.. Title of this movie sure confused me because calling someone "My 18" sounds a bit strange in both English and Serbian (my native language). After watching movie, I suppose that the title meant to say it was first love that happened at the age of 18. Perhaps in Mongolian language saying 18 нас (which is original name of movie too) is perfectly fine. Movie tells a story about two young adults who fall in love at first sight after meeting during ice skating. Film teaches us true meaning of karma because everything that happens wrong in the movie could have been avoided if Khulgee hadn't have bad encounter with Misheel's father before even knowing who he was. This is why its important to never make bad decissions in life especially the ones that are criminal activity. While watching the movie you still however hope the two end up together because Khulgee proves he changed himself and movie shows perfectly how even the most tough guys can be transformed into nice ones when feeling truly in love. The movie also shows very good part of Mongolian family culture and how relations function. Initially Misheel was living alone just with brother checking after her because parents thought she should be independent because she turned 18. However the moment Khulgee gets involved in her life, her brother and parents fearing for her safety start controlling her fully which shows Mongolian family in the end functions like a truly patriarchal conservative family where daughters are expected to listen everything what is being told to them. Once you do something wrong to a family (in this case Khulgee hurting Misheel's father before even knowing who was he) you will be considered enemy by them and its over. Misheel's feelings here are not considered one bit and nobody is interested if Khulgee changed. Another character we must mention is Khongoroo. He does not do much in the movie and does not even have much lines but he also help us see how Mongolian culture is. When he and his parents visited, I initially thought he is relative like cousin however soon we discover that he is son of family friends and Misheel's father thoguht he would be perfect for his daughter and without even asking Misheel he decides to send her and Khongoroo to study in England. This really shows that its still common practice in Mongolia for families to plan marriages for Children without consulting and any attempt to reject is met with criticism. One part of the movie points out perfectly how she is 18 and should be able to do what she wants with her life but reality is much different. Family is ready to use any force necesarry to make it be how they want. The reason why I don't give movie 5 stars but 4.5 is because ending disappointed me. Perhaps it's because I come from different culture but the fact that she in the end went to England with Khongoroo and leaves heartbroken Khulgee really made me feel sad because most of the girls from other countries would not make such decission. One can argue that she did it to protect Khulgee from her father since he threatned to make him imprisoned in case she does not go to England with Khongoroo but if this was the case I think she should have told him true why is she leaving to England and promise him she will love him forever and they continue long distance relationship in secret. After all, even if Khulgee was bad at the beginning he changed and she did promise him she will love him forever earlier and ending indicates that she actually broke promise because she left. Overall, this is great love movie that just has in my opinion bad ending. I very much recommend it especially for couples who have some issue in relationship such as some parent not approving it. It will hopefully help them not make same mistakes done in this movie. I really wish sequel gets made which will reunite them but 99% I am sure there won't be one.
