This cute little film resembles the 'Boy Love' genre in East Asia. Everyone is beautiful and the world is a fairly simple place. Except here, it's not.
The film touches on lots of topics - all the things you'd expect in a school - but doesn't, for me, at least, handle them in too much depth. Essentially I think the film is trying to do too much and cover too much territory.
With the 'Boy Love' films, they focus on the world of the young people and adults generally play a peripheral role. This film occupies that space but seems to lose it's way somewhat when it tries to address the influence of the outside world on the lives of the young people. Ultimately, there is only one character for whom we have much sympathy - and she's the Granny.
It's very well acted, nicely shot and is full of eye candy.
Certain sub-stories seem to get dropped or remain unresolved, and that is a little frustrating.
Perhaps what is most remarkable is that such an accomplished film has come out of Colombia. The difficulties I have with the film are a reflection of the fractured world it comes from.
