This isn't the out and out masterpiece that some are saying it is. There are some problems with the script and the odd performance, and it's just a little slight and cheesy at times... however the heart of this film, and the energy and poetry of the framing and cinematography, propel it into amazing cinema territory, and give it a very good chance at getting an Oscar. Some more 'sex' in the sexuality wouldn't have gone amiss, and there will always be the argument over whether that as forgone because it was from a straight director or with a view to not shocking audiences (Andrew Haigh's 'Weekend' did the opposite) but none of that takes away from the heart of the film, and some truly outstanding performances, particularly in the final reel.
