A genuinely funny and fun film from a country not widely renowned for its sense of humour, Soul Kitchen is a real departure from German-Turkish director Fatih Akin’s hugely impressive yet heavy-hearted Head On and Edge of Heaven. The joy in the chaotic Soul Kitchen comes from the array of smaller characters who collide with restauranteur Zinos to deliver the super sharp dialogue, including his proud and crazy new chef, his half-dumb brother out on prison day release (brilliantly played by Moritz Bleibtreu), greedy entrepreneurs and a saucy taxwoman. Driving the film’s heart is Akin’s eclectic soundtrack, which moves from funk to dub to house music, coolly drawing us in with the rest of the diners. This is a restaurant I would highly recommend, though you might be waiting a while for the food!
