There's a lot less hype around Jackie Brown than other Tarantino films and it's easy to see why. Compared to previous effort Pulp Fiction, this is oddly subdued and less quotable. But once you dig past its fascinatingly boring exterior Jackie Brown exerts itself as a confident and engaging piece of cinema.

In some ways it actually feels like Tarantino's most mature work to date, largely eschewing some of his well, pulpier sensibilities. It's still funny and there's still plenty of shots of women's feet, but for the most part Jackie Brown is poignant, slow-burning look at what its title character (played to perfection by Pam Grier)will do to escape her meagre existence as a flight attendant.
