Russia's first big budget supernatural film "Night Watch" is a beautiful dark fantasy with amazing characters and special effects. Its a simple plot of light vs dark however there is a complex subplot of division and fighting repression. Despite it's gloominess, the wonderful backdrop of Moscow at night brings the aesthetics to life. The urban setting brings realism to the Gothic supernatural underworld of the city. This is all helped by the amazing special effects and CGI which is what made this such a big film for Russia. Director Timur Bekmambetov creates a mood which is both repressed but enlightening with crazy characters exceeding expectations.
