There are those in gay history who were super gay, or super political or super famous. This chap, who I knew nothing about, would appear to have been super horny. The web is now full of people baring their all for their audience's erotic pleasure and tokens. The immediacy and, to some extent, the anonymity of the web has allowed a younger generation to make, star in and broadcast porn. Mr de Rome was doing all of this while it was all still illegal in a very, very different world. The scope of this film is huge, nearly nine decades and it drops names like a politician at a party. But the names that are dropped and the places they are placed are incredible. And yet, whilst dramatic, it's all incredibly understated - rather like the protagonist himself. It carries the sense of a documentary whereby things just happen, just as in life, and so reflecting the life of the Mr de Rome..That's the beauty of this film. It's shockingly simple and surprisingly good. This is a low budget documentary that punches way above it's weight.
