In a way this film rings a bell  to the countless migrants scattered all over the world, not just Asians.  While it may not apply to everyone,  I would like to think that this is a scenario shared by some.  There is also  a hint of desperation on the mother's side yet strongly fights it, as evidenced during the mother's conversation to her mom on the phone.  The boy is admirable though,  and saw it fit to commemorate Chinese New Year, even as it meant stealing a string of firecrackers from school.  While he may not totally express it, the boy is devoted to his mother and was aware of her sufferings all along.
