The Stepmother Synopsis

Langa, a young man trying to make the most of his lot in life, learns that his father is about to marry his pregnant girlfriend. But after the new Stepmother moves in, things soon start to turn for the worse for the young man when the conniving woman, unbeknownst to both Father and Son, starts using muti, a form of traditional medicine, to take control of the household.

With the Father completely under her spell, she convinces him to kick young Langa out of the house and onto the streets, all in an evil plan to bring her own son, Sipho, into the fold.

With her diabolical plan in motion, she and Sipho manage to kill the Father, but their crime is not a prefect one as a policeman witnesses Sipho fleeing the scene and both Stepmother and son are ultimately brought to justice.

Maybe it's just me and my vision, but why is it I can't help but laugh instead of crying during the dramatic scenes in this film? The actors' facial expressions may have something to do with it. That particular scene where Langa was kicked out by the stepmother and he was crying while saying "Why? Why oh lord?", well, it had a very queer effect on me indeed. Clearly their brand of acting seems queer, or maybe just different from what we've been accustomed to. Directed by Wally von der Merwe, this comedy-drama-musical film sure is unique and with a dark sense of direction and story.

At first I really thought this is a drama genre type of film but am I so wrong! It was actually a comedy-musical movie, complete with breakdancing-like moves that will make you chuckle and giddy perhaps. I was particularly amused with that scene where the stepmother tells Langa's father to take the drink with a spell in it.  What ensued was a sing and dance scenario with the father making sounds like that of a barking dog. I almost fell from my seat.  This film in its truest sense, will put stepmothers in a very bad light indeed. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the music and songs although beyond the dancing and singing also lies a very serious issue pertaining family relationships in the context of an African society.  Worth checking out!
