The Last Executioner Synopsis

Inspired by real events, The Last Executioner is the story of Chavoret Jaruboon, the last person in Thailand whose job it was to execute by gun. A rock musician who adored Elvis but took a 'respectable' job to support the family he loved devotedly, he constantly tried to reconcile the good and bad karma that came from his decision.

"Tom Waller crafts a stylish and fundamentally fascinating portrait" - Hollywood Reporter

A very solid production from Thai-Irish director Tom Waller, with an award-winning performance from actor Vithaya Pansringarm (Only God Forgives) in the real-life story of executioner Chavoret Jaruboon. I'm proud to have co-composed "Chavoret's Theme," a piece of music which appears in the soundtrack when the arc of Chavoret's character hits its peak. "Chavoret's Theme" also plays over the closing credits. Enjoy this film for a deep peek into Thai spiritual culture, as well as some great music :)

Being the last executioner earned Chavoret not only accolades but popularity as he became sought-after by media. In fact, he was some sort of celebrity because of his job. But, people could've never imagined the internal torment it gave him and his conscience was constantly put to test. A very admirable man and a film that is really worth watching!

As a breadwinner of the family, this film strikes a chord for me. Due to financial constraints and a growing family Chavoret has to seek work as prison guard and ultimately as executioner.  I admire his character, someone who has clear awareness of the consequences that his job may cost him. This for me is not only an insightful story on being an executioner and the goings-on inside a jail house but more so, a story of a family man and  a devout father and husband. I highly recommend this film!

Duty to family and his work were his driving force to do what has to be done... He had no desires to harm anyone, just do his job well and as humanely as possible... He truly is a rock star!

It is a story on the law of Karma. How this law is applied in modern times. As long as the duty is performed without the influence of desire or attachments then there will be no consequence to the action. This movie reminds me of Lord Krshna and Arjuna's debate in the ancient Hindu script Bhagavad Gita. Only in this lifetime Arjuna is a rockstar/ executioner. Fascinating story with a stellar cast and brilliantly presented by Tom Waller.

So disturbingly real and with stellar performances! The life of rock musician turned-executioner  Chavoret Jaruboon reflects a life fully lived and with so many lessons that can be plucked from, along the way. The candid depiction of his life leaves viewers speechless and  pondering. Here  you see a very righteous and religious man,  who is drawn to the job as executioner mostly due to financial reasons.  Very conscious of the consequences that may befall on him because of his job, Chavoret  frequents the temple and seeks the counsel of the Abbott just so to appease himself that he's not doing anything wrong. Still the innate monstrosity of his job haunts him and a recurring character (portrayed by David Asavanond) stalks him in a form of a fellow guard, a doctor and a bus passenger, among others. In a way, this character could mean Chavoret's alter ego or conscience. Vithaya Pansringarm, a very notable and multi-awarded actor, shines in his role as Chavoret. This film is indeed another collaboration between him and Director Waller that's definitely outstanding and skillfully made. Musical scoring was commendable and kudos to the cast who all lent genuine support to the central character. Penpak Sirikul as Chavoret's wife dazzles and she was not only Chavoret's wife but his rock as well. Thanrayat Praditthaen as Chavoret's daughter was also commendable and viewers vividly remember her as Fai's cousin in the flick "Patong Girl". Another very unforgettable character in this film who brings in not only holiness but humor as well is the Abbot, played by Jaran Petrcharoen.  This is one film that will stick to one's memory, not only because it is culled from real-life events and real people but because it gives viewers a peek on the insides of prison life and a peek on the hardened hearts of criminals.  That more than the mere act of execution is the drama and stories behind it all, as seen from the eyes of a person who's "been there and done that." Very affecting and compelling!  This is  surely a must-watch!

sharonmae  Now now Sharon don't get too sentimental... :) I guess dreams are in a way still fulfilled in a different light in the end.

  • This film  gives viewers a close-up view on the execution and justice system in Thailand. Can't help but think of the present situation in my own country,  especially now that it's in a state of transition.
