A skilful blend of hardboiled whodunit and supernatural chiller, The Detective sees a hard-up Hong Kong detective on the trail of a missing young woman with a possible connection with a series of murders that have plagued the city. Reminiscent of Seven and Angel Heart, The Detective is propelled by its gritty atmosphere and an excellent performance from Aaron Kwok. Unfortunately, the central mystery narrative is at times tedious and uneventful, but it’s certainly worth persevering for its chilling climax.
