After the disappointment that was 'Into Darkness', this installment returns to focus on the characterisation of the 2009 reboot that made it such a hit. However, efforts at creating drama between the characters is window dressing that favours mostly humorous banter, which in large part succeeds. There's certainly enough fun set-pieces and an exciting new crew addition, so it's all in there. The only slip up is villain Idris Elba, whose lines are difficult to follow as he keeps speaking through a mouth of saliva, and when he's not in alien make-up, hams it up to the hilt.
