A very faithful and deliciously mean retelling of the Grimm fairytale, with Sigourney Weaver munching up the scenery with aplomb as the wicked witch/stepmother. Monica Keena literally sleepwalks through the role, which is sort of fitting, while Gil Bellows and Sam Neill have very little to do in the background. This one's all about the female leads, and was kind of ahead of it's time. Some wonderful imagery, notably around the mirror but nice touches with a bird in an hourglass, the glass coffin, the gothic castle... sure it has the odd flaw but it's enjoyable just because it is so ballsily grim and distasteful. Yum.
