Isn't it surprising that not a single film in the near 20 (!) years since Scream was released has come close to its level of wit, fun and slash panache? That's because this is a film that is not your average teen slasher, but something much more cleverly constructed, a piece of meta art that has stood the test of time. It was a signifier for an MTV/smartphone generation, cleverly tapping into and holding a mirror up to it's audience, scaring them while poking fun at them AND making them laugh. Throw in performances and characters ten times more fleshed out than the norm for such a genre, and exhilaratingly directed set-pieces, and you have an instant classic. You'll never look at cat flaps in the same way again.
