A film that is out and proud ugly, brazen and lo-fi, 'Ruined Heart' is a gritty headlong delve into crime, sex and death in the urban underground of the Philippines. It certainly has elements of Brillante Mendoza (in particular, 'Tirador') but it feels more like an experiment. It doesn't always work, and unless you're game to be confused a lot of the time as you follow this aimless criminal, it can be hard going, but there are beautifully framed shots along the way and, quite frankly, it's so unique and bonkers I enjoyed it.
