A gripping, nifty little thriller that is both pulpy and slick, perfectly portraying the unpleasant underbelly of Los Angeles, people, and television news! I watched this twice at the cinema, it's rare that I do that. I wanted to get more inside the head of Gyllenhaal's character, although I didn't have much success. If anything it made me feel even more sorry for Rene Russo's hard as nails Nina and Riz Ahmed's tragic Rick. In fact, they are the best supporting performances I have seen in a very long time and the film is just as much theirs as it is Gyllenhaal's. A really brilliant piece of ambitious but lo-fi filmmaking. Look forward to seeing what the director does next...
