Lan Yan Synopsis

the irreplaceable sense of community in a diminishing traditional neighborhood of Shanghai, told from the reflections of a bus driver and his 12-year-old daughter. The rapid increase in prosperity and the international modernization of Shanghai has been implemented on a mass scale at the expense of the displacement of lower-income traditional Chinese communities. As residents of a Shikumen area known as Lan Yan, Mr. Zhang and his daughter reflect upon the sense of closeness and community he and his neighbors have experienced for over a century, even in their cramped living conditions.

Lan Yan showcases the clash between human values and modern progress. Viewers will see that the two don't normally go hand in hand. In Shanghai, a community thrives despite of its cramped conditions and low income residents. Modern progress, however, calls for the discontinuity of this thriving community. Viewers will be asked whether it is wiser to demolish these communities or to let them thrive. Maybe there is even a fairer solution. What that might be, is left for viewers to answer.

There is always a price for progress. In Lan Yan, viewers will see the human cost of building a Skyscraper in a dense city like Shanghai. Lan Yan will show the resigned attitudes of residents towards their community's imminent demolition. More importantly, it will show the tightly knit relationships built through generations that will be destroyed to make up for new skyscrapers. Noteworthy is the resilience of the main characters in the film. They remain cheerful despite their lonesome future.

  • Culture and history are representation of life and a remembrance of the past. Destruction it is painful. Vanishing the past has a repercussion to the modern era, and I hope builders will see that someday.
