Kotoko
Japan, 2011, 91 minutes, SD
Kotoko Synopsis

Shinya Tsukamoto, the cult director of the cyberpunk Tetsuo series, presents an unnerving film about mental instability. Kotoko (folk-singer Cocco), a young single mother, lives alone with her baby son. Suffering from an unknown illness that makes her see double – especially people – and not knowing which version of the person is real, it severely impacts her day-to-day life, often leading to her to lash out violently.

As her situation worsens and she becomes a liability, her son is taken from her a put in the care of her sister. Kotoko is left alone with her own thoughts – and for a person with an already broken mind that is a very scary place indeed.

The songs used  are meaningful but sometimes they  last for a few minutes that viewers become fidgety in their seats.  Cinematography and shots used are great though,  noticed close up shots all too often of Kotoko's face. Director Tsukamoto depicts ideas that are commonly observed in his films, and in this case the fragility of a person as well as alienation. Kotoko, in a sense is disconnected from the normal flow of society, all in a world of her own. Cocco is a great singer, no doubt about it, but in the realms of acting I think she has to grow more in order to get that connection with the viewers.

Disturbing but at some point it shows vulnerability and soul. Kotoko is indeed a woman like no other, she sees double and incidents  turn from bad to worst until ultimately her child was taken from her. Cocco, a J-pop folk rock singer portrays Kotoko quite well, her facial features seem to match her quite unstable state, something to do with the slant in her eyes that will make you take a second look. Acting is laudable and the idea of her singing to keep her sanity is somewhat unique,  her voice has that melodious and lilting sound that will charm you, viewers won't think for a moment that the owner of such a warm and calming voice is a mentally disturbed person. Worth checking out!
