In the Absence of the Sun Synopsis

In a megacity like Jakarta, things change swiftly and constantly. In the Absence of the Sun follows three women as they search for belonging in a metropolis that never sleeps.

Gia (Adinia Wirasti), returns from years of living abroad in New York and attempts to adjust to the culture shock. She seeks solace in her former love, Naomi (Marissa Anita), who seems to have conformed to upper-class societal norms of materialism and superficiality. Together, they try to resolve their feelings for one another and the people they have become.

Meanwhile, Indri (Ina Panggabean) works as a towel girl in a local gym, dreaming of a better life, and widow Surya (Dayu Wijanto) discovers her deceased husband’s affair with a woman named Sofia and starts frequenting the lounge she performs at.

Exploring Jakarta's multitude of unspoken tensions between tradition and modernity, Kuswandi's second feature film is both nuanced and tender, humorous and poignant. The film is as much about its charismatic characters as it is an unflinching look at the city itself - one that is undergoing incredible and rapid change, its inhabitants both losing and finding themselves in the swirl.

An interesting take on depicting the quirks of life in Jakarta that many people often ignore or do not realised it as oddities. The 3 women depicts the issues and struggles faced by 3 different social classes that each women represented. Along the story, it invites viewers to discuss the various social issues that is present and prominent in Jakarta, yet people simply closed their eyes to such issues because it is easier to do so. Despite the seemingly heavy content, Lucky Kuswandi managed to deliver all these issues and nuances through a highly entertaining story that is sure to make its viewers experienced mixed feelings. This is a highly recommended movie for everyone to watch. It is a highly refreshing addition to the Indonesian movie scene that is full of cheap, low-quality, inappropriate horror movies. I really do hope that this movie will one day become the benchmark/ canon in Indonesia's movie industry.

Change is the inevitable and relentless force that brings the separated aspects of life together.  It is swift, certain and constant. And for us humans, to not be left out – to not be lost in the eddy, we must learn to dance to its beat. Jakarta is a perfect example of a megacity that is constantly undergoing change emulating the rest of the world.  This is the story of three women who find themselves in the swirl of this inescapable force, the difficulties of adjustment, conformity and the struggle to keep true to themselves and their uniqueness and identities. It is the story of Gia, returning from New York City and adjusting to a new life with old love Naomi who’s found solace in the emptiness of materiality. It tells also about Indri’s dream of greener pastures and Surya who frequents a lounge where Sofia, her deceased husband’s lover, works. It tells about adjustment and resilience, and in the end, the patient interpretation of life’s hostilities.

Three parallel stories unfold over the course of a single night in Jakarta, a city akin to its people: forever changing, never settling. Drawing on themes of modernity and traditionalism, the question of whether progression is in the best interest of the city permeates the narratives. Each character is battling their own internal conflict, and although they do not interact with one another, the juxtaposition of their narratives evokes a poignancy greater than the sum of its parts. A truly beautiful and gentle film.

This filmrnresonates with me as a Southeast Asian. Jakarta is very much reminiscent ofrnManila. The busy streets, the promise of progress, the unhealthy night streetrnfoods, the quickie motels, the contrasting religious beliefs. The women'srnintertwined plots helped thread together what's beautiful and ugly in thirdrnworld country's diverse and culturally rich society. What do we hold on to andrnwhat do we let go for the sake of progress?
