It is a rare and beautiful achievement when a film lives up to all of its hype. Gone Girl destroyed me; it left me sobbing and agape with horror. Quite a feat Mr Fincher. This mesmerising crime drama turns the intimacy of the disappearance of Nick’s wife, Amy, into a public spectacle, as he becomes the chief suspect of her murder. Driven by Affleck and Pike’s hypnotically captivating performances, Gone Girl grapples with illusion, mystery, and façades, whilst constantly teasing us with the tantalising threat of violence. I wasn't entertained. I was horrified. And yet – in spite of the protagonists’ truly monstrous natures – I couldn’t help but sympathise with both of their predicaments, which is a testament to the brilliance of the acting. Not one for the fainthearted, Gone Girl is a gut punch that’ll have you crouched at the edge of your seat throughout. An extraordinary and heart-breaking film.
