A dewy, wistful and languorous tale about two youngsters in love, their grappling with responsibilities in their tentative years, and the sad realisation that adulthood and new beginnings mean that some things must be left behind. Beautiful sustained shots, framed by the beautiful Taiwanese countryside and mountains, depict moments of strained family relations but also comedy and boyhood camaraderie. Few films have captured this delicate time with such apparent ease. A moment involving a family from Hong Kong washing up ashore at a military base is a deft touch at letting politics dip in and out of the story.
