Cold Harbour Synopsis

OUT SEPT 30TH - A seasonal south-easterly storm washes up the mutilated body of a Chinese man on a Cape Town beach. For township cop SIZWE MIYA, this is an opportunity to prove himself and earn the promotion he desperately needs. His boss and mentor, VENSKE, gives Sizwe the case but assigns a rookie cop, LEGAMA, to keep an eye on him.

Sizwe discovers that the homicide is linked to Triad (Chinese mafia) abalone smuggling in Cape Town. He seeks advice from his former comrade SPECIALIST, now a crime boss. A tip from Specialist leads to a major abalone bust, but Venske calls Sizwe away from escorting the seized abalone and the shipment is stolen. The whole thing is a set up. With Venske already on his payroll, Specialist is using Sizwe as an unwitting ally in a criminal scheme of his own.

In a world where self-interest and corruption have overtaken personal loyalty and civil duty, Sizwe is left with no one to trust. He refuses to go along with the scheme and his life is threatened. Integrity demands that he betray a friend and take the law into his own hands.

Viewers have all too often encountered the plot and main idea of this film, that of corruption all molded together to bunch up one great crime action drama but still, watching this, will engross you no end. For one, there is a very admirable cast of characters. Tony Kgoroge as Sizwe Miya is commendable and puts on a passionate performance, while Deon Lotz as police chief Venske was cunning. Lotz is well-remembered for his award-winning  role in the film "Beauty". Chinese actress Nan Yu is also in this movie as a shipping executive and she's a bankable Chinese star who made it to mainstream US films like The Expendables 2. Another character worthy of mention would be the character of Camilla, played by Zolani Mahola, who is interestingly also a singer aside from being an actress.  These characters  make the film interesting enough. This is director Carey McKenzie's first fiction feature film and she also wrote the film's screenplay, a filmmaker to watch out for.

This crime noir movie from South Africa is promising and has impressive cinematography, with scenes shot in greys and muted colors.  Cape Town looks somber, dull and with overcast skies,  just perfect to set the mood for a crime film that's beset with intriguing yet colorful characters. The spotlight is on township cop Sizwe Miya, who tries his best to free himself from his once murky past.  His dedication to solving a case of abalone smuggling shakes up a great big cloud of corruption and criminality involving not only the expected suspects but from people of the police force itself. A classic unfolding of corruption at its best,  this movie features a whole cast of talented actors including Chinese star who was with The Expendables 2 movie,  Nan Yu,  as Soong Mei. Gritty and with engrossing!
