Choi Synopsis

Michael Yan Choi (Sifu Choi, as he is known to his disciples) sees Wing Chun as a way of life. It has been his passion, his livelihood and his struggle for three decades. Despite these challenges, Sifu Choi is the driving force behind his Wing Chun group, and served as the inspiration for the story. His eccentricities, strict approach to practice and sense of humour embody the unpredictable element of Wing Chun fighting – trying to maintain order in a practice, which constantly teeters on the verge of chaos.

The documentary is very educational. And it is true, once an art is diluted by commercialism it loses some of its value. Martial arts isn’t for the purpose of fighting whether in the offensive or defensive perspective but a way of thinking and living. And Master Choi explains this very well. I am quite moved by what he said; “we try to eliminate the things that are not working for us in life or death situations”. I think this is applicable in all situations in life.
