Castration Synopsis

Lourdes is almost 24, works at a casting agency and takes care of her handicapped father, since her mother abandoned them years ago without explanation. Strange for her age and despite the advice of her best friend Victoria, Lourdes has never had a boyfriend nor kissed anyone, just an internet flirt. One day, her mother returns home, reopening old wounds.

I am all-praises for this amiable lady Lourdes in this film. Dedicated, hardworking and a good friend and babysitter. She is a woman trapped in a world that should've been more nicer for her. The scenes with her mother show her disdain and unforgiving side. There is a subliminal meaning in the hands; close-up scenes of her holding the baby's fingers,  her fingers clasping her mother's hands and her fingers with which she pleasures herself. These scenes mean a lot and make up a part of her character. She is also always seen with dishevelled hair,  this in one way or another reveals a part of her nature and emotions. Keyla Wood as her best friend is commendable; vampy and sultry and I particularly liked that scene where she was giggling uncontrollably when Lourdes asked the doctor about the "smell". Also worth the attention was Lourdes' boss and yes, Lourdes' mother.  They lent great support all the way.  Go see this film, you will be appalled with the emotions that it unleashes!

Watching the story of Lourdes as it unfolds gave me feelings of sadness and pity for this young woman.  She was evidently robbed of the right to be her own self, to explore, to love and cultivate her talents and interests. She has a relationship with a guy but only online and she is a stark contrast to her uninhibited friend. There is a sense of loneliness in her story but on the other hand, I admire her dedication of caring for her father. For me, this is an eye-opener indeed and a movie that you should watch.

edwinjamescalin I know, it is sad to see a young woman stalled from blossoming and reaching for her potentials.

It's hard not to notice the innate appeal and talent of Victoria Santaella in this film.  As the lead character the story revolves around her as well as family relationships. There is a claustrophobic sense in the way her life revolves and toying with the idea of what the title meant, I somehow presume she was "castrated" or "cut off" from the more usual ways and goings-on for a woman of her age and wisdom. This is a film worthy of a discerning audience.  Do check this out!

A heartwarming and engaging indie film by Director Ivan Lowenberg who's also a photographer and screenwriter for TV docus. This compelling story of a virginal lady who's devoted to caring for her father and resentful to her returning mother is impressive for its cinematic shots and great portrayals. This is a well-received film in Bolivia and Ecuador and premiered at various film fests garnering various awards such as The Best Foreign Film Award from the Winter Film Awards in New York and Jury Prize- Best Fiction Film at the Word Extreme Film Festival.  This is highly-recommended!

lenidecastro  the truth is I pity the character of Lourdes,  it seems she's not enjoying the prime of her life. The 20's age is that great time of your life where you start to establish a career,  date someone, party and all. On the other hand, I admire her love and care for her father. I can't help but feel sad for all the Lourdeses out there, I know there are... (sigh)

  • A very interesting movie, insightful on women's issues and the expectations the world has in general to a "dutiful" daughter against living her own life. This happens with men too.

  • The return of the mother is the spark for Lourdes to question herself and her mother, duties and responsibilities vs. her right to live her own life the way she wants to.

  • Santoella is impressive in this film, no wonder she got a Best Actress Award at the Hermosillo International Film Festival for her portrayal as Lourdes. Bravo!
