Boundary Synopsis

The 2011 New Year celebration at the Ratchaprasong Junction in Bangkok. This is where demonstrators’ protests were violently crushed a few months earlier, with more than 100 people ending up dead. It was there that the conflict between the largely rural "red shirts" and the more affluent, royalist "yellow shirts" escalated.

How did this come to pass? Filmmaker Nontawat Numbenchapol came across young soldier Aod by chance, who had just completed his military service, and asked if he could accompany the soldier on his way home. Aod’s village is on the border to Cambodia and near the Hindu temple of Prasat Preah Vihea, which both countries claim as their own. Here too, a violent conflict is smouldering.

This is truly an eye opening topic as the film shows the people suffering from war between states. It's not the warring government factions that suffer the consequence of war but the people living in the area. We've seen this through out history but no one seems to learn the lesson that in war everybody loses. The surprising factor in this documentary is the music.

"Boundary" is touted as a Thai political film mainly because it tackles the Thailand and Cambodia border dispute. This documentary is an eye-opener as it is relevant and viewers become aware of the central issue amidst a background of electronic and indie rock music. It is interesting to note that Director Nontawat Numbenchapol created the film by chance during the New Year Celebration and this went on  to open the Salaya International Documentary Festival in 2013. Cinematography is commendable and viewers can pick up insights on some pressing issues from this docu film.

This film was considered controversial and has even been banned for local viewing by film censors. While it addresses the issue regarding the conflict on the Thailand and Cambodia border, the film also aims to give focus on the people who are affected most, those who inhabit the area of boundaries.  A sad and realistic tale that hopes to instill awareness,  do check this out, folks!

sharonmae I agree with you, this film really addressed border issues that not only affect Thailand and Cambodia but other countries as well. I wish that we'll learn the lesson that war will only bring suffering, and dehumanize people...

  • Boundaries between two states are a subject of debates everywhere. Unfortunately the people living in these areas are the ones firstly and mostly affected. This is an eye opening account of such conflict.
