Beyond the Walls Synopsis

At the end of a night out, Paulo goes for one last drink where he meets barman, Ilir. Being too drunk to get home, Ilir offers to take him back to his place.

The next morning the young handsome musicians joke about sex over breakfast but without realising that this is only the beginning for their erotic journey. Despite initial hesitation the two grow closer and experiment in an sensual world neither knows much about.

When Paulo's girlfriend finds out about their love affair, she kicks him out which forces him and Ilir to move in together. Whilst at first they fill their days getting to know each other's bodies and pushing their own limits and boundaries, the intensity of their relationship eventually becomes too much.

Their love is severely tested by a dramatic series of events and when Ilir ends up in prison, Paulo is forced to become independent. He grows close to the older manager of a gay sex store whilst longing for Ilir to come home.

Beyond The Walls charts an intense sexual relationship and was officially selected during Critic's Week at Cannes. David Lambert's first feature is for fans of recent gay classics like Weekend and Keep The Lights On and sees an incredibly personal look at a challenging relationship which resonates with us all.

Starring Guillaume Gouix and Matila Malliarakis from Channel 4's hit show, THE RETURNED.

As much as viewers are drawn to this film for its LGBT theme, one also gets curious because of the title.  For a moment, I thought it was of the suspense genre but nevertheless, the portrayals are impressive. There are some scenes that were treated uniquely, like that confrontation scene between Paulo and girlfriend with the girlfriend reading a text message from Ilir and then telling Paulo to leave the apartment, albeit in a gentle almost hushed voice. Peculiar and interesting, as only director-writer David Lambert can do.  With the emergence of gay films in recent years, this flick is yet another testament of individuality and uniqueness of human relationships beyond what is previously considered conventional ones.

This film got my attention not only for the realistic portrayals of the two lead characters but also because of the not so common scenario, a love triangle, but in this case,  the third party is not a woman but a man. The bickerings between Paulo and his girlfriend over the other man is interesting to watch, you can feel the tension and with the woman brimming with resentment and jealousy. The movie also explores the pros and cons of the gay relationship and its ultimate fate. Engaging and with sensual albeit passionate scenes,  worth checking out.

Commendable performances of Gouix (as Ilir)  and Malliarakisv(as Paulo), the gay lovers in this film. While Ilir may be the dominant one Paulo is the more childish and wayward one who seems to find his way still with regard his sexuality, as  he also has a girlfriend. Onscreen chemistry is unmistakable, the intimate scenes highly charged and erotic. This film gives a peek on the premise of a gay relationship and lets viewers in on the psyche of two people, who, in the course of their relationship reaches some major realizations.  Worth checking out especially for LGBT fans.
