Set in Bangkok’s infamous red-light district on Thaniya Street, a place that flourishes by servicing only Japanese men, Bangkok Nites is centred on the character of Luck, a sex worker who has moved to the city to financially support her family in rural Thailand. One day, Luck happens to cross paths with Ozawa, a previous client with whom she’d fallen in love several years earlier. An ex-soldier of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces, who had nowhere to go, lives a modest life in Bangkok, barely making ends meet. When the reunited couple leave the city to visit Luck’s family, they envision a possible future life outside the megalopolis. Through a trip to trace the scars of colonialism, they look for paradise that we had lost.
