Awakening is about the soul of an old woman travelling back to her youth. She unveils a buried secret that has haunted her for years and hinders her from moving onto the next life.
The film is inspired by the song "Here Before" by Fever Ray and draws from Chinese folklore about death and reincarnation. According to Chinese folklore, souls in the afterlife must drink Mong-Po Soup to erase all memories from their previous life and cross the River of Forgetfulness before they could finally move on.
