Once more Herzog decided to return to the deep, luscious Peruvian rainforests for his take on the conquistadores at their hunt for gold. Only this time the leader in chief is the maniacal Klaus Kinski; both on and off the screen. Such is Herzog's fascination with the environment in which he is filming, Aguirre's sometimes feels like a a observational documentary, yet Herzog's penchant for long shots also gives the film an ominous feel. Aguirre, Wrath of God is by no means one for the historian, but for cinema lovers is ranks amongst Herzog's best, reason enough alone to watch this masterpiece. Stunning!
