Blancanieves is certainly an original take on the tale of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Shot in black and white, the film reimagines the damsel in distress as a heroine, a bullfighter in early twentieth century Spain. The film is replete with the full canon of the nation’s traditional symbology, and for some viewers, the adorably simple townsfolk and the clownish villains may be a bit much. But I loved it! Effectively a silent movie, be willing to get caught up in the romance and the sentimentality. (And Maribel Verdu is fantastic as the gorgeous, evil stepmother.)
