A film that can't quite make up its mind sometimes over whether it wants to be an all-out crowd pleaser with cheesy moments or a serious drama that isn't afraid to pull punches, 'St. Vincent' is actually all the better for sitting on the not-so-neighborly fence. Similarly, Murray is an actor adept at navigating the divide between comedy and drama so needs no help stealing his scenes, although this time there is stiff competition from McCarthy who, while not champing on her comedic chops, does very well in fleshing out her character. Special mention must also go to Naomi Watts, who goes for broad laughs and hits every target.
