What I've always enjoyed about Rohmer is his choice of locations and the characters he plops in them. Likewise in 'L'ami de mon ami', our kooky leading lady spends much of her time in Marne-la-Vallee, one of those utopic Parisian satellite towns which just look plain scary (now and then I might add). In typical Rohmer fashion, we follow Pascale Ogier, as Louise, around various Paris digs and shindigs while she uhms and ahs over whether to get closer to bullish boyfriend (90's action movie and Russkie villain stalwart Tcheky Karyo) Remi. In any other director's hands, such antics would have been tiring to watch, but Rohmer has his ways...
