The Mud Doll
Taiwan, 2014, 6 minutes Drama
The director Tami XU Qian-Chun adopts a child’s point of view to explore how abuse is experienced by the youngest members of the family. The little girl seems withdrawn and quiet. It’s hard to tell how much of an understanding of the situation she actually has, and in general children have, but without a doubt it is a huge emotional burden. The final scene and the girl’s reaction, or lack thereof, is puzzling. This short draws attention to the important topic of family abuse and suppressed emotion. The story though is quite predictable therefore neither does the film bring anything new nor evokes further emotional reaction from the viewer.
