Donald Sumpter (from probably the best Poirot film 'The ABC Murders') gives a standout performance that occupies the entire film and keeps it riveting. No mean feat when you consider he's probably got about twenty lines of dialogue. With it being based on true events, the workmanlike, bluntly unpleasant scenes of murder have a more unsettling edge, as do the more workaday moments where our post office robber sits down to eat pie with his wife and daughter. A cold, fairly straightforward film that presents the facts and nails the chilling atmosphere they deserve.
