Wow. There aren't many films that completely jump off a cliff halfway through but this one does it with shameless aplomb. Things start off brilliantly, as we are immersed in moonlit LA streets, the glare of studio lights and the thudding bass of underground nightclubs. The scene where Jesse is taken to a club back-room by her make-up artist friend Ruby (a delicious Jena Malone) and witnesses a red latex S&M vision, is a masterstroke. Things progress promisingly, if occasionally stuttering (Keanu), with the coming to the fore of the dastardly models that surround Jesse, but, without wanting to give anything away, this is when Refn surrenders his grip on the story he has crafted. Why oh why? A huge disappointment and a slap in the face of the audience. And no, there's no deeper meaning to any of it, he tried that last time and failed, too.
Not for me
