My first impression when I saw the title was that this film may be a fantasy movie, but no, this is one action-filled historical drama that will hold viewers in awe from start to finish! Maybe a more appropriate title could've been in place? Nevertheless, this film packs in elaborate battle scenes, grandiose costumes and yes, a massive forest house of the hermit/doctor/former New Moon warrior Duan Lanquan. No wonder, it's reported to have a big budget at an estimated USD 16 million. While the story centers on the empress Yen Feier, and how she leads the kingdom of Yan albeit with hesitation, this film also showcases the skills of veteran actor Donnie Yen. I was somehow waiting for his well-known kung fu moves and martial arts expertise but while he did get to do some routines here, the action was more about sword-fighting and killing enemies while riding horses. There's never a dull moment for me while watching this film whether it be the battle scenes or the sweet, tender moments of conversation between the empress and the hermit. Will the empress succeed in uniting her kingdom? It's for you to discover so better watch this film to find out.
