This film is completely bonkers. The set-up at the beginning is outrageous, yet effectively chilling and extremely violent and graphic, but then, as is the norm for these kinds of Japanese sci-fi films, acute melodrama sets in and there's long hauls of pat philosophizing and girlfriend/boyfriend tropes to get through before the next special effects bonanza. Having said that, it's still crazy enough to keep you glued to the screen. I preferred the first chapter slightly more to the second.
