From the conversation of the man and "the guest" one gets the notion that the man is a killer who has killed not only his parents but also his wife and daughter. While it is not clear as to what drove him to be like this, or if it was some kind of mental illness, one gets the idea of suicide as a final recourse and to appease "the guest" which seems to exist only in his mind.
