Uncle and Son Synopsis

As his parents left a long time ago, the boy must then live with his uncle, who is a tailor. Their house in a peaceful village in the Southern region is simple yet cosy. However, the innocent boy can’t ignore the heartless gossips about his uncle’s life from practically everyone else. At the same time, considering his nephew a kid, the uncle can’t give him a reasonable explanation or excuse for his questions either. The boy blames himself and decides to find a solution that he believes will bring his uncle a better life. Yet his decision only leads them to even more tragic circumstances.

One of the powers of film is its ability to lift us out if our world and place us  somewhere unknown.  It's not just geography but a sense of location and culture, and even gossip. This ability is a particular gift of short films. They are direct, succinct and pointed. Warchinf this film in my room in the heart of London, I was immediately transported to a village in a part of the world I know very little about. Within moments I had a sense of the people and place and,  yes, even the gossip. This film may have a few technical issues, but they don't count for much compared to the 'ark' of the film - the ideas of family, sexuality and culture it explores. There is real power in this intimate little gem.

Gender issue is a very delicate topic especially when discussed to a young and naive mind.  This film is heartbreaking, it shows how gossip can affect other people's lives and for this, it made a child run away from home. It destroyed a peaceful relationship, gave chaos to harmony. Society should consider re-evaluating their approach to gender difference. This short film has a powerful message. I hope it gives awareness.

I am not familiar with the actors of this short film but I like the candidness  of the acting delivery by the actors.   The simplicity of the scenes  is in itself contributory to the over-all charm of this short flick.  One comes to the realization how seemingly ordinary gossips can readily affect a nephew who looks up to his uncle. I can't help but notice  the lady on the boat,  whose close up shots merely focused on her mouth. It was entertaining  just looking at the way her mouth twitches here and there.  And as much as I wonder why the shots only centered in her mouth, one can easily say so that nothing else of interest should be accorded her,  aside from being a gossiper.   While there is no direct confirmation that the uncle is indeed gay,  the last scene where a guy was seen  looking for the uncle seems to give a hint and somehow confirms it.

  • The cinematography captured the Vietnamese country side beautifully. But the story is depressing.
