With an opening tracking shot that swoops from behind a drive-through screen of the original cultish film high above the heads of ogling Texas teens, there's a gorgeous sense of oeuvre masterpiece that bristles in the opening minutes of this ambitious meta-sequel. Alas, coming from the team that brought you 'American Horror Story', this visual flair rapidly degenerates into OTT editing and an endless splurge of showy camera angles. The script also loses its way. A great pity, as it all started so promisingly. The whodunit subplot goes on and on, and the twist isn't convincing, either. To hand Veronica Cartwright such a thankless role is the real crime here.
