A little girl, Mui, went to a house as a new servant. The mother still mourns the death of her daughter, who would have been Mui's age. In her mind she treated Mui as her daughter. 10 years later Mui (now a young woman) was sent to another family, a young pianist and his wife. The musician falls in love with the peasant, he taught her literacy and they eventually married. A movie about a girl's life.

Tran Anh Hung's signature delicate sweetness in his films is seen in this beautiful movie about pre-war Vietnam. There is a hint of spirituality in Mui's curiosity of her surroundings, and in her mannerism as she does her daily chores. It is good to see a movie about Vietnam that's not about war. This is more of the celebration of life and the gentleness of the Vietnamese people. Tran brings out the sweetness from his characters, the setting and atmosphere of his movies.

Sooo happy to discover this film here on Filmdoo! Watching it is like being lulled into a rhythmic, poem-like dimension. There is beauty in detail, this is what I realized. The pureness and meekness of the girl is a contrast to the other lives around her. I love the cinematography and surprised to discover that the entire setting was shot on a set in, (guess where? ) Paris! This is a film that viewers would love to watch over and over again. Director Tran Anh Hung, for a first-time director, is way ahead of his time,  pure genius! Watch this and be carried away with the beauty and purity of this movie.

jeteli I hope Filmdoo also feature Tran's other works. I'd like to see The Vertical Ray of the Sun and his adaptation of the coming of age cult classic Norwegian Wood by H. Murakami.
