An initially unpleasant youth (aren't they all at some point!) learns the way into people's hearts is not from scheming but from organic friendship, it has to grow naturally. 'Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You' turns the agonizing life choices of a 17-year-old boy into the stuff of high drama. This is a quiet little film, quite a rarity from 'issues'-propelled new US indie cinema, that turns it's charm on all of us. Always great to see Ellen Burstyn on form - ever since Requiem for a Dream I've been enraptured by her.
