Despite two utterly beautiful main casts, this is not your typical Valentine movie.  The films centers on the deterioration of marriage and questions if love is enough to save it at all. It gives us  a raw glimpse on how a once passionate relationship diminishes into a toxic marriage. Is it a case of familiarity breeding contempt or an example of two incompatible people getting stuck for life? Derek Cianfrance does not even answer that at all. In this film, he doesn't have to. Seeing reality in the performances of Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling is enough vicarious experience to wake you up from the illusion of romance and give you a dose of truth on how keeping a marriage together is a decision you make together. Every single day.
