A simple plot is soaked in a mise en scene that is so thrillingly electric and daring, it deftly walks the tightope between absurd and film school case study. At times even the swelling central performances - Gwei and Liao in a dangerous love affair - come close to being smothered by the outrageousness of it all. But Diao masterfully reins in the visuals to allow the heart at its core to beat. A wholly unique experience.
