Set in Papua New Guinea in 2001 around the time of the death of Theys Hiyo Eluay, chairman of Papuan Council Presidium, Bird-Man Tale tells of the coming of age a teenage Papuan Boy and his friend in the midst of political and religious unrest. Arnold, 15, obsesses over his desire to kiss a young woman he meets at the port. Meanwhile, his father, Berthold, a cassowary dance instructor and activist, is being hunted down by a group of anonymous thugs for his political activities demanding justice for the detention of Eluay. When Eluay is murdered, Berthold goes into hiding, leaving his son to fend for himself.
