Nantes, 1955. The shipyards are on strike. François Guilbaud, a metal worker engaged to Violette, meets Edith. They fall madly in love, but he doesn’t know she’s the daughter of the Colonel’s widow from whom he rents a room in town. And Edith has a jealous husband, Edmond. Edith and François, blinded by passion, realize they are nothing without one another. The workers’ strike for their rights takes a harsh turn and gathers momentum : they face a wall of helmets, shields and clubs.
“Demy’s only openly political film, A ROOM IN TOWN is also his purest masterpiece, the one that fully expresses his lyricism. [...] A subtle, enthralling work.” Frédéric Bonnaud, Les Inrockuptibles
